Teleport is a unique VPN software that protects your data and online presence by granting you secure access to your home AmpliFi network, tunneling connections back to your home and masking your IP address. AmpliFi Teleport is a complimentary service available to all AmpliFi users with no subscription or one-time fees.
What do I need to use Teleport?
What hardware is needed? Teleport was initially only available with the Teleport hardware (device), but since then we have developed two other options: the Router to Router VPN connection and the Router to Teleport App VPN connection. Find instructions and requirements for these three options in these articles:
- Router to Router: Teleport: VPN Router to Router. You will need at least two AmpliFi Routers, and a Teleport Code which you will generate in the AmpliFi app. This is a good option if you wish to use the VPN with devices that do not support the Teleport app such as laptops and smart TVs.
- Router to Teleport App: Teleport: AmpliFi Teleport App. You will need an AmpliFi Router and a device running the Teleport mobile app, along with a Teleport Code which you will generate in the AmpliFi app. This is the easiest option since most AmpliFi users will already own an AmpliFi router and have a device that can run the Teleport app. The Teleport app is available for iOS, Android and Android TV devices and downloadable in the App Store and Google Play store.
- Router to Teleport Hardware Device: Teleport: How to Set Up the Teleport Hardware Device. You will need an AmpliFi router and an AmpliFi Teleport device.
Remote Access: To use Teleport you must enable Remote Access which must be initially set up while you are connected to your AmpliFi network locally, and using a Ubiquiti, Google or Facebook account. Read more about it here: AmpliFi Remote Access. Previously, Remote Access could only be enabled with one of the social platform accounts. Doing so with a Ubiquiti account, allows you to use any email of your choice for those users that do not have, or do not wish to use their social accounts.
Being Locally Connected and then Away: Read the instructions for configuration of each method carefully before traveling, since it's possible that you will have to perform the initial part of the configuration while still connected to the AmpliFi network locally (at home). And then when you need to test or use the Teleport feature you must be "away", meaning not connected to your AmpliFi router's WiFi. For example, if you are at home setting up Teleport with the Router to Teleport App method, make sure to turn off the WiFi on your mobile device (the one running the Teleport app) to force it to use cellular data and not connect to your AmpliFi router's WiFi.
Internet on both ends of the VPN tunnel: Teleport provides a VPN connection, and not a hotspot or internet connectivity of any type. To work, your home AmpliFi router will have to be connected to the internet; and the device that is receiving the VPN connection (be it another AmpliFi router, a mobile device running the Teleport app or the Teleport hardware device) will also have to be connected to a WiFi network that is not provided by the first AmpliFi router, because to work, Teleport must believe you are away from home.
